Homecoming is ONE week away. (10/31/09)
I will be there and hope everyone can make it.
An update from the chapter:
We will not be having blow ups for the kids. The blow ups are being rented for the weekend. There were talks early on of having a catered lunch after the parade. Unfortantly with the school year just getting started and with Rush this is also not going to occur.

Just wanted to try and let everyone know beforehand so no one was blindsided. Look forward to seeing everyone.

Don't forget about the annual Homecoming meeting on Saturday.

As most brothers remember, Most Wanted Man was the night that sealed the deal for many who were on the fence about which fraternity to join - if any at all. Tomorrow night, we celebrate our 40th Fall Rush. In honor of the event, a group of alumni are going to Cookeville (suited up) to show our support and dust off our Rush shoes.

Sept. Nashville Alumni Event - It's Your Call

We are on the cusp of September and want to get in TWO more events for the Nashville alumni. We have a group going to Cookeville to show our support on September 17 for the Most Wanted Man Night of Rush at the house. If you are interested, email EJ (2ericjohnson [AT] gmail.com) or JT (kappa.sigma [AT] yahoo.com)

In effort to get the most people, we want to get the input from those of you who'd like to come out. Blake and JT have worked hard to make sure the July & August's events went off without a hitch - so you are going to help with the planning for the September event by answering the following TWO questions - what day? what location? We'll set the time as 6-8, but you can stay out as late as you want. Get there early if you'd like. As long as you can make it.

Fall Rush

Fall is just around the corner. Football is in the air. Its that time of year again, FALL RUSH. The undergrads are currently in the process of improving the house for the start of school and rush. Unfortunately, the budget for the undergrads is really tight and are asking for help. Items that need to be repaired include:

Door going to the porch facing the FIJI house
Multiple doors around the house (holes in them)
Volleyball lighting (Need new lights, improved lighting)
New flood lights for out front
New Dishwasher (current one won’t drain, possibly just needs to be repaired)

These are the more pertinent items they would like to get repaired before Rush begins.

If anyone or everyone could send some money ($20) to the chapter c/o rush work week fund to help they would greatly appreciated. These repairs will go along way to continuing making out house the best house on campus. AEKDB

Nashville Area Alumni Happenings & More

Brothers in the Nashville area will be getting together at Dave & Busters in Opry Mills this Friday, August 14 @ 7pm. We hope you can make it out. Thanks to JT and Blake Oakley, this is out second event this summer & ww are already planning one for September if you can't make it to this one. Want to know more?

Summer Party / Homecoming

Summer Party was over a month ago and I would like to thank everyone who was able to make it to Summer Party. The golf tournament raised over $3400 for the scholarship fund. The Tidwell's won for the 3rd year in a row. There was a play off for 2nd and 3rd. I would also like to thank the undergraduate chapter for doing a good job with the yard, and picking up every day.

Homecoming is October 31st. Due to other reasons, the undergrads first try at family friendly events didn't turn out as expected. They now have their focus on homecoming, and have insured me that they will have everything ready to go. More information to follow at a later date.

On a different note, a couple brothers and their significant others are planning on attending a Predator's game on December 12, 2009.

Undergrad Update

Update from the Undergrad Chapter

We had 7 brothers attend conclave in San Antonio, Texas. We again received numerous awards as the excellence of the chapter continues to rise. We received our 3rd straight FACE award as well as the George Miles Arnold Ritual Proficiency award along with many other recognitions. We are very happy with these awards and look forward to continue the Kappa Mu excellence.

Adam Poe was elected as the Area 3 UAC (Undergraduate Advisement Council). This is a huge honor as Poe will represent the entire Area (Over 45 chapters) at all SEC meetings. Congrats to Poe. We all know he will go above and beyond and serve Area 3 with pride.

We look forward to kicking off this semester with a great Week of Welcome and Rush during the 3rd week of school.

Homecoming will be on October 31st. Hope everyone can make it out for a celebration of our 40 years on campus.

Side Notes:
Also, an idea was given to me by Matt Campagni, that I believe would be great, is for all alumni at summer party to wear the rush shirts of the year that they got initiated. I understand that these may be tucked away in unknown drawers in the house, but if you have any remnants of clothing that relate to Kappa Sigma from when you were an undergraduate, I encourage you to wear them. It would be neat to see how our colors have continued to shine from generation to generation. –Adam Poe

Rezoning, Softball ...and so on

PROPERTY REZONING
Update from Eric Johnson & Jon Ward

In the end we determined as an organization that rezoning to UNV from CL was the best fit with our long term plans for the house at 525 North Walnut. During the final days before the May 18 Planning meeting, Jon called to talk to James Mills, Cookeville's Planning Director. In an expected and historically typical response, James Mills stated that our property was currently a non-conforming use and would be "taken in even if they were kicking and screaming".

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank the city of Cookeville and its employees, like James Mills, for treating all property owners with respect; tempering actions and statements with wisdom; and all the steps the city has taken to foster the respect it deserves.

SUMMER PARTY PLANNING
On that note, Summer Party is coming - its less than a month away! In conjunction with the planned events, we are planning special events at the house for Saturday. Matthew Parrott is working to have some family friendly fun during the day at the house - snow cones & other stuff for the kiddies. Jordan Ray has also stepped up to make one of our most time honored traditions possible. You'll have to come to the house on Saturday to find out... (this is the best cliff hanger I can come up with)

Don't forget to let Kevin Harmon know if you'd like to play in this year's golf tourney

Finally, Oakley is planning a softball game for Friday night that should do well to throw off eveyone's swing for the golf tourney on Saturday - not to mention pull muscles and hyperextend things.

I hope this message reaches everyone before Summer Party. I have arranged a Softball double header for the Friday night of Summer Party (June 26) starting around 6:30 pm. I am currently trying to assemble an unstoppable Alumni squad that will completely embarrass the Undergrad team. Apparently, they think they have a pretty good team since they won the IFC Softball championship this past Spring. However the Alumni lineup is starting to look very very nice, but we still need to fill some holes. If you are interested in strapping up the cleats for the 1st Annual Summer Party Double Header then shoot me an email. Make sure you include the following: preferred playing position, 40 time and 12 yr. old little league batting average. If you can't recall those particular stats then we probably won't have a problem sliding you in as an extra hitter and designated beer drinker. For those of you that don't feel like you "have it" anymore then I hope you will still show up to see the old guys take them to the woodshed. I will try not to release the lineup early so our Undergrad team does not back out. Let the trash talking begin....

Rezoning Property

There is a current proposal to rezone the propert at 525 N. Walnut.

The current proposal will directly affect our property. This item is set for action on the Cookeville Planning Commission agenda for May 18, 2009. The proposal is to rezone Kappa Sigma's property to UNV, University District, along with all other properties encompassed by the red border depicted on the attached map. The current zoning for our property is CL, Local Commercial. This district is more liberal with permitted uses, including many uses permitted in the Central Business District. The UNV district will restrict some uses by right and uses on appeal (special exceptions). These uses are defined on the City of Cookeville's web site under the planning department link. You can view the text sections defining these districts at the links attached below [PDFs] & links open in new window:

Current zoning: CL, Local Commercial

Including some uses in CDB, Central Business District

Proposed zoning: UNV, University

City of Cookeville Zoning Code

The zoning classifications are controlled by the City of Cookeville, and Tennessee Tech would not have any jurisdiction on our property. The city would not care what activities take place there, so long as the police aren't involved. The UNV zoning district is designed to better accommodate university related uses.

I would not see where this would have any negative affects on our property as long as our current use continues. In the event of another catastrophe, there would be no time limits set to reconstruct a non-conforming use, as we currently have under the CL zoning classification. We would be losing some of the potential uses by right and special exceptions that we currently have under the CL zoning district.

Hope this answers some questions. Reading the zoning classifications will give everyone a better idea of how this affects the property.

Unless someone tells me different by COB Tuesday, May 12, I plan to submit that our organization is in favor of the rezoning of 525 North Walnut from CL (Commercial Local) to UNV (University).

The only concern that has been brought to my attention was "If our property is zoned UNV, does that give TTU any additional say or input as to what we can do with or at the house?". From the input I have received, the short answer is no. This zoning is at the city level. It only relates to how the property can be developed.

So, that being said. Any more concerns from anyone? Anything else we need to hash out? Any reason for either way?

Silence is acceptance. If I do not hear any nays, I am going to make a blog post announcing the previously mentioned position; explanation of 'terms; and contact information for questions (this will be me unless Ward says he will do it)

Brothers, What an incredible outpouring of Support and Love of the Order!

We have now surpassed the $115,000 mark for the Kappa Sigma Military Heroes Campaign, with over 150 on-line and check donations. In the last 48 hours your donations have averaged nearly $200 per donation. In my 30 years as a Kappa Sigma, I have never seen a greater show of excitement and support for our Order.

A representative from the Fisher House today, told me that he was in awe of Kappa Sigma and our fundraising ability. He wished that his college fraternity, one that each of you will recognize, could achieve the same level of giving that he is watching Kappa Sigma deliver. What an incredible compliment to you!

Well, it's that time again! Time to dust off the clubs and shoes, and head out to the golf course so you can be in top shape for the 12th Annual Kappa Mu Golf Scramble / Summer Bash (A celebration of the 40^th anniversary of the Kappa Mu Chapter).

From the hot stove…

Word on the street is that two-time overall champion Greg “Beast” Overby is actively pursuing a replacement for Harmon. Apparently he is dissatisfied with recent results and Harmon’s unwillingness to play “hurt” last year. Sources close to the situation have quoted Beast as saying… “Harmon had never won anything without me on the team”. Those same sources have indicated the Beast has targeted legendary former TTU golfer and Kappa Mu alumni David “The Rock” Belcher as Harmon’s replacement.

Belcher- if you are reading this, we want to see you back in Cookeville this summer. However, be mindful of any offers you might receive from Beast.

Crawfish Boil 3/28

Brothers,

The undergraduate chapter is having a crawfish boil this weekend in conjunction with initiation and the 40th anniversary of the chapter. Due to monetary circumstances, they need an accurate headcount of the amount of people attending. If you are planning on eaten some crawdads this Saturday, please contact either Spencer Tidwell (sgtidwell21@gmail.com) or Adam Poe (adam.poe.543@gmail.com) and by Wednesday and let them know you are attending so they can reserve your spot. The chapter is asking for a minimum $15 dollar donation to help pay for the crawfish. There will be a live band (Homestead) playing while we eat outside. You will receive a koozie and 5lbs of crawfish. Sorry for the short notice, but we hope everyone will be able to make it out on Saturday! Thanks.

The Chapter has planned a big event for March!

We will be doing our first Crawfish Boil on the 28th of March following initiation. The events will include a dinner and a band. Plates (admission tickets) can be purchased at the door but right now I cannot say a definite price, probably $8-$10. We have 500 lbs of crawfish being brough up from Lousiana so its gonna be tasty.

A Crawfish Boil is more than just a dinner, it is about cooking the crawfish and the atmosphere. We want all alumni to come and enjoy this time with us. It is combined with the initation celebration and it will be a really fun time of course.

Brothers,

It has been my great pleasure to have worked with the men of Kappa Mu now for some 4 or 5 years. We have seen many changes and so many advances. I have come to know and admire these men and the alumni who challenge them to be the best, and they are the best. I hope you can all appreciate this in the 2 straight FACE Awards. This does not just happened and in fact very rarely happens.

I would like to also invite you to the meeting of Feb. 15 with the Chapter as I thank the men at TTU for accepting my challenge of several years ago to become the very best. I asked them to become 'Best of Show' in a very elite group, Kappa Sigma. They have accepted this challenge and proven to be exactly that, my "Show Dogs" and I think they deserve to hear that directly from the District Grand Master.

I hope this helps you all appreciate and cherish what these men are doing for the Order, for Tech and for your legacy as Kappa Mu Men. You should be proud and know that the work done by many of you made these successes possible and I know the example of men like my dear friend Cameron Stinnett made this possible. Please attend and support your chapter as they truly have become "BEST OF SHOW"!

The Alumni Association's 2009 Progress & Plans

The Alumni Association gathered at 525 North Walnut for the Annual Meeting. I've sent the minutes as taken to the officers. Once approved, I will post them on the blog and send out the link. We have some very aggressive initiatives that will be starting as soon as the minutes are approved. Communication is imperative to the success of each and every one if these - so this is a major first push to make the long term goals attainable.

Here is a quick overview of what all we have going on:

I am encouraging all of you to join this group. It has the built in functionality of adding/removing people from email lists, facilitating discussions, links etc. Get on the list to help reduce bounce backs and stay up to date on what's going on at the house and with the alumni association.

Lastly, speaking of information - we need your help to update yours. Go to nationals' site to update your information. We will likely be using an updated list from nationals to send out the newsletter, so it is important to update it ASAP. Go right now.

Brothers,

I would like to ask that this small note be placed on your Alumni List Serve>

It has been my great pleasure to have worked with the men of Kappa Mu now for some 4 or 5 years. We have seen many changes and so many advances. I have come to know and admire these men and the alumni who challenge them to be the best, and they are the best. I hope you can all appreciate this in the 2 straight FACE Awards. This does not just happened and in fact very rarely happens.

I would like to also invite you to the meeting of Feb. 15 with the Chapter as I thank the men at TTU for accepting my challenge of several years ago to become the very best. I asked them to become 'Best of Show' in a very elite group, Kappa Sigma. They have accepted this challenge and proven to be exactly that, my "Show Dogs" and I think they deserve to hear that directly from the District Grand Master.

I hope this helps you all appreciate and cherish what these men are doing for the Order, for Tech and for your legacy as Kappa Mu Men. You should be proud and know that the work done by many of you made these successes possible and I know the example of men like my dear friend Cameron Stinnett made this possible. Please attend and support your chapter as they truly have become "BEST OF SHOW"!

I have tragic news. Ashley Martin died in a fire Thursday, February 5. According to The Daily Post-Athenian:
“…The body of Ashley Martin, 31, was recovered about 1 p.m., several hours after firefighters began extinguishing the blaze at 1360 County Road 658.
Firefighters were called to the barn at about 5 a.m. but did not suspect anyone was inside the structure, officials said. Sheriff Steve Frisbie said Martin's car was not there which led investigators to believe the barn was vacant. Martin had turned the upstairs loft of the barn into living quarters.
The fire rekindled shortly after noon, and investigators learned Martin's girlfriend had his car. A search was launched and Martin's body was found in the rubble.
Frisbie said state bomb and arson investigators were called to help, which is standard with all fatal fires.
The sheriff said there is no reason to suspect foul play…”
